Melbourne’s south east suburb of Hampton saw properties scoring more average views per listing compared to any other place in the country, an area that saw Block All-Stars Mitch and Mark take out the win at this season’s auction, earning almost $650,000 profit on the sale of their house. 

However, Sydney featured on much of the list with the inner west suburb of Annandale taking out second spot in terms of viewings, followed by Balmain and then the beachside suburb of Bronte, according to the data from Domain. 

In fact, Sydney dominated in the top 30 listings, apart from the suburbs of Hampton and Lambton in Newcastle and Albert Park in Melbourne. 

In Queensland, the Gold Coast suburb of Currumbin had the highest views for the state, particularly from people looking for a sea change, with more than a quarter of inquiries coming from NSW. 

Launceston in Tasmania, Unley in Adelaide and Fannie Bay in Darwin were the most in demand suburbs in those states and territories. 

There were also a record number of properties sold across Australia with 446,800 houses and 144,500 units being purchased by keen home buyers, the real estate website found. 

The number of property sales soared above the decade average by 18 per cent for capital cities, while regional Australia boomed at 42 per cent. 

Chief of research and economics Nicola Powell said Sydney had seen extraordinary rates of price growth, with interest in premium suburbs this year a combination of genuine buyers alongside aspirational interest. 

Houses sold in record time — the quickest since 2008 with four beds, two baths and two car spaces the most commonly searched, while units experienced the same with sales the fastest since 2014. 

Keyword searches for study, garage, balcony, courtyard and garden increased in 2021 and lifestyle additions and location became more of a focus, with a hike in searches for pool, beach and water. 

The top suburbs with the quickest sales included Sydney’s Killarney Heights, Diamond Valley on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland and Sassafras in Melbourne with places being snapped up in just 10 days. 

It was even faster in Tasmania where property in Goodwood in Hobart was sold in just eight days. 

While combined Australian capital city house prices peaked at $1 million, recording the fastest annual rate of growth on record at 21.9 per cent, some relief is expected for buyers in 2022 as the house price growth rate continues to cool. 

“The year is closing in a different position to the start, sellers are re-engaging with the market, increasing supply which in turn offer greater choices for buyers,” Dr Powell said. 

New listings are coming to market quicker than they are being sold, she added. 

Domain expects that Australians will continue to seek out coastal locations, with beach side popularity continuing to boom — house prices in Somers in Victoria, Byron Bay in NSW and Sunshine Beach in Queensland have increased by 69 per cent, 58 per cent and 48 per cent respectively over the past year.
